investigating the newport house

For photos and evidence please visit www.ocparanormalsociety.com.

The owner of a house in Newport Beach contacted OCPS to help him with strange occurrences in his home. Over the past four years there were sounds of footsteps, electrical spikes, creeks and even quarters flipping. The final straw: One evening while watching TV with his girlfriend, which is satellite, the image turned to snow and a silhouette of an old woman appeared, crouching and looking to crawl out of the TV, also known as the Sea Hag. We were very excited!

Oh and the house was complete with stripper polls, lounge area, bars, keg-o-rators and many, many drunk people wondering where the party was. After drinking way too much the night before, this house was making me sick.

Once again working with our friends, NOPS, this investigation was going to be broadcasted live on the Web. Again, very exciting!

As Brigid and I were taking base readings throughout the house we ventured into the main bedroom. In the doorway that leads into the bathroom I was turning to leave when something pulled my sweater. This is the first time I had ever experienced something like this and I have to tell you... it was thrilling.

A couple minutes later we headed to the basement. Completely alone in the house, we all heard light footsteps above us. Directly above us was the closet - later on in the night this would all make sense.

9:30 p.m.
Show time! We begin the live investigation. While filming the promo, Dray feels something tug at his jacket. Whatever is in this house, it likes f*ing with us.

** We have some downtime since there are multiple groups investigating the house. I go to the "command center" to view what people are writing on the live message board and see that my brother and his girlfriend think "I am magical".  Thanks guys. **

Starting at 11:17 p.m.
Brigid, Dray and I are up. We begin in the main bedroom to see if the teaser ghost is still with us and try to lure the Sea Hag out of the TV. Once in the room the K2 meter had an immediate spike.  A couple minutes later we asked for the entity to touch the meter and again, a spike.  Something is with us.

Sam radios and tells Brigid and me that we are too close together and we should spread out.  We found out later in the night that a psychic was watching the investigation and saw three entities in the room: a woman, a little girl and something that was a bully.  The woman and girl were in the closet and it seemed as if they were scared of us so it would be better if Brigid and i separated; hopefully making them feel more comfortable.

Still not knowing about the woman and girl, I heard a click come from the closet. Unfortunately it was very hard to hear with every drunk, insane Newporters walking down the street.

We decide to investigate the basement. I'm not going to lie, I did not want to be alone in that area, just something felt creepy and the footsteps earlier in the night didn't help. I knew I was on the Internet... live... so I sucked it up... in the dark basement. The atmosphere was very still, therefore no drafts. Almost immediately we start feeling cold spots and then the K2 meter flickered all the way to red.

We continually get more spikes and it becomes very cold. Then as sudden as it started, it stopped. We can still hear every douche in Newport walk by the house.

Then footsteps... where we were hearing the light footsteps, as if they were by a child (a little girl perhaps), were in the closet. The cold spots return and the K2 flickers again. More light footsteps then a loud footstep - the bully? I caught the loud footstep on my recorder.  Sweet.

Brigid and I feel an intense cold spot; so cold that our hands are cold from it. Brigid's hand is freezing. The air is very still.  We check for any sign of a draft and cannot find one. Again coinciding with the cold spot, we hear the light footsteps running above us.  No one is in the house.  There is too much activity above us so we decide to go up to the living room.

While walking into the living room from the bedroom, Brigid sees a shadow walk across the hall by the second bathroom. It's too hard to tell because of the car lights reflecting throughout the house. In the living room we can literally hear every meathead in Newport. I can smell the Drakkar Noir through the door.

No activity in the living room so we go back to the bedroom. It almost seems as if the entity we are hunting is trying to move away from us, although one thing is for sure, something keeps pulling us to the bedroom. On our way to the bedroom, Brigid and Dray hear something in the second bathroom so we go and investigate.  Literally, where ever we go, it moves. Jerk ghost... or it's scared. In the bathroom, no activity.

Back in the bedroom we are then radioed that it's time to switch.

** More down time. I ponder why I am such a cool chick. I bring out my leftovers from lunch and we feast on cold pizza at 1:00 a.m. A friend texts me and I try to explain that I am a ghost hunter in my spare time.  He doesn't believe me so I give up. Brigid and I learn about the woman and little girl in the closet as well as the bully that is in the doorway between the bedroom and bathroom - where my sweater was tugged earlier. **

2:04 a.m.
Round two with Brigid and Michael. We go back down to the basement. The only way to the basement is to go through the main bedroom, into the closet and downstairs. As soon as we enter the closet we get a spike on the K2 meter.

In the basement, Michael comments that the camera is having a hard time focusing. Something could be walking in front of the camera, causing it to focus or perhaps it's draining the battery to use the energy itself. Or the camera could be crap.

We start to hear footsteps again, but this time it sounds different.  We think there's another team in the closet, which only proves the footsteps earlier were not another member of the investigation team, but something else.

To be fair, and that includes being fair to ghosts, we ask "if you want us to leave please make a noise". I heard a tap directly in front of Brigid; a tap so loud I thought it was Brigid making the noise. A couple minutes later, another K2 spike.

We are radioed that there is 30 minutes left of the investigation. We need to go back to that bedroom.

On the way up the stairs, in the closet, we get a massive K2 spike. The K2 meter is flickering red and not stopping. The NOPS team is in the bedroom and as they approached the closet, the flickering stopped. We think it was scared away again.

We are then told the "bully" or something evil was in the doorway between the bathroom and bedroom again. I want this bully to do something since it is scaring the woman and little girl. I stand in the doorway. Nothing. This tease is a freaking jerk!

For the closing ceremonies we all meet in the basement for one last EVP session. Nothing. Whatever is in this house, it is scared easily and likes to tease - or perhaps it's two entities. We have to come back - during the week when Newport douches sleep and buy more cologne.

movie review time

New Moon
It was like Catherine Hadwicke never existed! I am happy actual filmmakers who make films and who were equipped with things like common sense and brains, saved the series. I’m sure the first orders of business were to force Rob Pattinson to take acting lessons and to replace Kristin Stewart’s chap stick with nail polish to stop her from biting her damn lip! I am not complaining, but it did get a little silly that Jacob took his shirt off for everything: “Oh your nose is running,” (shirt off). Can’t wait for the sequel. Rob Pattinson was awesome and hot. Taylor Lautner will be awesome and hot February 11, 2010.

The Blind Side
I SO did not want to see this movie. I go to movies to watch buildings blow up and Batman try and catch the Joker, not “feel good about myself”. As much as I hate to admit it, I did like this movie. Very sweet. It’s nice to know there are good people out in the world. Football player extra #4 was awesome and hot.

Sherlock Homes
Holy crack pipe Robert Downey Jr.! I was pleasantly surprised how good this movie was. Guy Ritchie still worries me since the Madonna has tainted him, but with Rocknrolla and now Sherlock Homes, with a sequel in the works, I am happy to be a guy Richie fan once again. Dude Law and Robert Downey Jr. acted as if they had been long-term associates and really made their relationship believable, another plus to the movie. Robert Downey Jr. was awesome and hot.

Avatar
Am I the only person on planet earth who has not seen this movie yet?  I do love me some Sam Worthington, but watching 10’-tall Smurfs battle marines for six hours just doesn’t make me want to rush to pay $15 to watch Michelle “Bitters” Rodriguez jump out at me.  Sam Worthington is still awesome and hot.

investigating the rialto historical society, part deux

For photos and evidence please check out www.ocparanormalsociety.com!

Back to Rialto! The Rialto Historical Society asked us to come back and investigate the First Christian Church, attached museum as well as investigate the Rialto Adobe and adjacent graveyard. Win win.

When setting up, the at-first threatening “locals” found out we were paranormal investigators and soon we all became fast friends (we like to have thought so). They even told us they were big fans of the TV show. Um, yeah. I’m not about to argue with that group.

We were joined by the kick-ass guys of North Orange County Paranormal Society (NOPS) and surprised-joined by the psychic network of Rialto. After feeling a threatening presence in the church the group decided to leave. We hadn’t had any activity in the church on the first investigation and soon discovered these psychics may have been onto something…

5:10 p.m.
A "psychic" goes to the right corner of the Adobe and asks anything to make its presence known.

5:17 p.m.
Outside the entrance of the Adobe, I try and turn my camera on and it errors. Never has done this.

5:30 p.m.
In the Adobe with Tray. The "psychics" are inside watching a black figure on the monitor. The figure is standing in the right corner of the building, of course by the scary old man photo. They were "drawn" outside to marker of Merlin Hendrickson. Interesting.

5:40 p.m.
We have realized investigating in the Adobe is pretty much impossible because of the wind howling and the fiesta next door.

5:47 p.m.
On my digital recorder, there's a dog barking then a groan. Interesting EVP, but not totally sure since the wind is tampering everything!

5:55 p.m.
Something is up with the walkie talkie. The power standby keeps turning on, which is weird since it should only come on if you don't use it for a period of time, although Tray had been using it. This plus my camera turning off means two electronic tweaks within an hour. The walkie is fully charged.

6:00 p.m.
Feeling calm in the graveyard. Place was pretty dead (see what I did there?). Tray noticed a light in the graveyard. It wasn't a reflection from a marker since there would be nothing standing upright to make a reflection. We all took turns to see if it was something came up short. While watching Tray and Richard walk toward the light, they walked through it. Definitely not a reflection.

6:20 p.m.
On my turn in the graveyard I stayed out a bit longer. A bench had a plaque of the first body buried in Rialto, who died in 1902. I saw the actual tombstone, which had the death date as 1901. Way to do your research Rialto

6:30 p.m.
Back from the graveyard, Tray tells Richard and me about a rustling noise he heard by the door. Unfortunately, I can't hear in on my recorder.

6:35 p.m.
My camera has died. The battery was fully charged before the investigation.

6:40 p.m.
Richard tells us about the bottle of beer and baseball hat someone left on a grave, which is now gone. Damn you Rialto!

8:00 p.m.
After feasting on Burger Mania, and instantly regretting it once again, I share my plans to marry Zak Bagans. Now the serious stuff. Brigid and I start investigating the basement where we last encountered Edward. I am sitting with my legs elevated since we saw mice in the kitchen. I wonder if mice have sonar abilities...

8:17 p.m.
We see quick shadows run by the post office.

8:24 p.m.
Brigid hears a breath next to her.

8:42 p.m.
Mike had come back from the Adobe and we asked how it was. He says "It was pretty dead." I wonder how many times we are all going to say that?

8:50 p.m.
Brigid feels cold spots by the post office. Interesting things, but no sign of Edward. Bummer.

9:26 p.m.
In the church with Brigid and Mike. As Brigid and I walked through the back hallway we heard footsteps behind us. It was Mike. Heart attack #1. Mike decides to go into the attic and climb the tiniest stairs EVER. I am getting flashbacks to Paranormal Activity. Mike takes a photo of a pigeon that looked into the camera. We are not sure if it's dead or alive.

9:50 p.m.
Getting no activity and feeling comfortable, we decide to turn it up a notch and ask more provoking questions. We asked "Since you were a churchgoer and believed in God, do you still believe in God even though you're stuck here?" Very thought provoking. Mike leaves to go film the others.

10:10 p.m.
We talk about Harry Potter and premarital sex, trying to provoke whatever presence is there, if any...

BANG!

A loud bang next to Brigid makes us both jump and scream! Brigid does a 180 and flips, scaring me more. I now know that if I am ever scared my reaction will be laughing until my stomach hurts. We laugh, out of sheer fear, for the next 5 minutes. Yes, it was a little unprofessional, but I can state that without a doubt that we experienced something paranormal and I have never been frightened like that before. We start to wonder why no one has come for us. We have no nerves left.

11:00 p.m.
We tell the guys to go provoke the hell out of the spirits in the church.

Midnight
In the museum with Josh and John Adams. Other than the creepy mannequin and even creepier dolls, we feel completely comfortable.

12:30 a.m.
We see Nolan preaching on the monitors. A little later when the guys come back from the church they tell us they could hear footsteps. Apparently the spirits are churchgoers and have made it clear they do not like us being blasphemous in their church.

12:35 a.m.
Julie, Brigid and I head into the basement. We are hoping since it's a little later we will get some activity. Nothing, bummer.

1:15 a.m.
The guys from NOPS brought a doll and wrapped Christmas gift for Kristina. They start investigating in the playroom and immediately hear toys move on the shelves. Brigid and I see shadows by the post office again.

1:30 a.m.
After getting no response and thinking it may be better if a woman tries to communicate with Kristina, NOPS asks me to step in. Unfortunately nothing. Kristina hates me.

1:55 a.m.
Chris wants me to bring batteries to the church. I am apparently going alone. Not sure if it's nerves or if my stomach is cursing Burger Mania.

2:00 a.m.
Back in the church with Brigid and Mike, Chris wants to see if we can provoke the spirits again. Round two. Witchcraft-nothing. Paganism-nothing. Judaism-nothing.

2:25 a.m.
We asked for the spirits to make a noise and are startled by the bangs we hear coming from outside. This is good. Chris radios and tells us to wrap it up, we are getting out of there. Thinking Chris was the one who made the banging noises, I respond in the walkie "Nice one Chris". Back at headquarters we are told the bangs are gunshots. Quickest wrap-up EVER.

things i learned on match.com

Realizing I was not going to meet guys by working 23-hour days and then going home to sleep, I decided to give Match.com a whirl. I have begun to think my experiences needed to be shared so I can serve as a warning to others.  By all means, please laugh at my expense:

  1. Good looking + psycho = still psycho.
  2. READ THEIR SUMMARIES!  If they mention seeing a psychologist, do not communicate.
  3. Some boys are lying liars who lie. Be careful.
  4. Does the guy look familiar?  That’s because you knew him 15 years ago.  Move along.
  5. If golf is mentioned in the profile more than 10 times, and you tell him you don’t golf, don’t be surprised if he doesn’t call back.
  6. “Self employed” is code for “unemployed” 9 out of 10 times.
  7. A "plant" is not a pet. I don't care how much you take care of it.
  8. Meeting for coffee? I am a smart girl, I know this is a test. Don't flatter yourself.
  9. The age listed is 30 and he looks as though he fought in the Korean War? See #3.
  10. You know what, there are too many! I'm writing a screenplay.

then again this guy viewed my profile and didn't wink

investigating the yorba linda house

Like every professional Ghost Hunter I was prepared with my equipment and ready for action. Oh wait, I wasn’t because I forgot my camera – sorry no photos this time. This was the second time the group investigated a private residence in Yorba Linda, which was scheduled to be torn down – as I type this it is no longer standing. It was a beautiful house and area with lots of space (dirt) and trees (bugs).

The last time the group investigated the home a woman’s voice came through on Brigid’s walkie-talkie when the other members didn’t receive the same signal. Very odd.

Speaking with the homeowners, they had seen an apparition of a 9-year-old girl in the basement of the house. They also told us the story of a neighbor’s sister who took a gun and walked across to the edge of the property and shot herself. Fun times!

9:00 p.m.
Arrive in Yorba Linda. The shell-of-a-house looks depressing.

9:30 p.m.
Watching the camera feed at headquarters. Lots and lots of orbs (dirt). Get the bejebus scared out of me when I hear voices from behind. Apparently there is no wall and the homeowners are watching me. I think they don’t trust me with their dirt.

9:45 p.m.
The house next door loves Celine Dion. Do you want to know how I know? Celine Dion is blaring, correction, more like screeching, from the next-door neighbor’s house. At night. With neighbors. And with apparent no taste for music. This is not good for our recordings.

10:00 p.m.
Start my investigation with Chris and Nolan. We begin with provoking since the house is going to be torn down and no one would feel the repercussions. Half-way through we realize the presence seen was a 9-year-old girl. Whoops. I see an Ouija board from the corner of my eye… hmmm.

10:15 p.m.
Nolan and I start asking the girl if she would like to play a game: hop scotch, tag, hide-and-seek, hide the weasel – wait, what? EW Nolan! I offered that if the girl was present she had my permission to kick Nolan as hard as she could. Unfortunately nothing.

10:30 p.m.
We travel down into the basement, which smells as if something died. Can hear Celine even more. I hate her.

10:45 p.m.
I walk out to the front for some fresh air – trying to get basement smell out of my nostrils. Chris is walking in front and tells me to watch out for the huge spider. My life flashes before my eyes and he can tell I may die from fright. He tells me, “It’s no big deal” as he shines his flashlight on it. I scream “Don’t do that, it’s how they gain their powers!” He is happy he has learned that not only am I deathly afraid of spiders, but I am a complete moron.

11:00 p.m.
Start my second investigation with Brigid and Julie. We all eye the Ouija board and decide it’s time. The last time I played Ouija was in sixth grade, right before we watched The Exorcist. I am starting to get terror flashbacks from 20 years ago. We are about to play when the walkie-talkie flips out. We can hear a woman speaking. The guys can hear the walkie-talkie from he other room and cannot hear the conversation on their walkies. Very odd. The one good thing is that Celine has now stopped.

11:15 p.m.
We focus on the Ouija board and point the triangle at the number 6. Nothing. Brigid and I hold the triangle to get the 9-year-old to play with us. The triangle moves a fraction of an inch – not sure if it’s Brigid or me, but we think we didn’t move it. A minute later the walkie-talkie freaks out again and we can hear the same woman, but cannot make out what she is saying. Interesting. I’m starting to get tired from holding the triangle and bending over the table. I need to get to the gym.

11:30 p.m.
Brigid thinks it would be a good idea to sing Ring Around the Rosie to make the girl comfortable. Julie, Brigid and I sing. We didn’t sound half bad. I am thinking about becoming the next American Idol.

11:50 p.m.
We decide to make one more sweep in the basement. It now smells like a yeti peed in a dead skunk’s stinker, took it home, left it in a closet with its old gym socks and then sprinkled it with patchouli.

Midnight
We be done. Overall, I felt completely comfortable and didn’t experience anything except for the walkie-talkie incident, which may be nothing but interference. We finish the night with cake for Mike’s birthday. Late-night cake and ghost hunting – a perfect evening.

actual conversation I had this week

While washing my hands in the restroom at work...

Me:  Hey, how are you?
Miss X:  Good. So how’s the condo?
Me:  Oh, I just live in an apartment, but I just moved. It’s really nice.
Miss X:  I thought you bought a condo.
Me:  No, not me.
Miss X:  Yes you did.
Me:  I think I would have remembered that.
Miss X:  I know we were talking about it.
Me:  No. I am anti-buying anything right now. Too stable.
Miss X:  You were upset about the association dues.
Me:  Why would I lie about this?
Miss X:  Are you sure you didn’t buy a condo?
Me:  It wasn’t me.
Miss X:  I swore you bought a condo.
Me:  Well if I did then I am selling it.
Miss X:  (laughing) Well I hope you make a lot of money off it!

This week’s Really? is brought to us from Spain. A toymaker has released Bebe Gloton – translation: "what the fuc*?!". Kids wear a vest with flowers on the nipple area – already this is bad. When the baby is close to the flowers it makes a sucking noise to simulate breastfeeding. Really?

For all you crazy La Leche League women, you can reserve yours on eBay for the economical price of $112.00.

time to laugh at my pain

Having caught the feng shui bug, I had the need to reorganize my desk at home. I came across a two-day journal I wrote just before I was to undergo a procedure – I won’t go into details, but in a nutshell my innards had to be pristine, which meant no absolutely no food. Please enjoy at my expense…

Day 1

8:00 a.m.
Today is the day I begin my fast. Naturally I tried eating a large dinner last night, but somehow it backfired and now I’m starving. Not a good start.

8:30 a.m.
Not allowed coffee. Damn.

11:00 a.m.
Having peed for the 8th time, I’m getting a little sick of water. I stupidly left my white grape juice at home. Getting a little bit hungry. I am allowed a couple slices of turkey for lunch, which will be my last bit of food for a couple days.

Noon
I nibbled at the turkey so the meal would last longer. Half way through I gave up and swallowed it in one gulp. Goodbye food.

3:30 p.m.
Feeling pretty good. This isn’t so bad.

5:00 p.m.
My mother called to remind me to pick up dinner for my Dad’s birthday. Suddenly regretting not telling my parents about the test and now I’m forced to get yummy BBQ.

6:00 p.m.
The food smell in the car is making me want to jump into a grease fryer. It smells SO GOOD! Ribs, ribs, ribs. I hate ribs, but suddenly I would kill a koala for one rib, or to eat the koala.

8:00 p.m.
Told my parents about the test so I wouldn’t have to sit at dinner. My mother, true to form, packed my bags and took me on a guilt trip for not participating in my father’s birthday dinner so I sat at the table sipping my white grape juice as they smacked their lips against chicken, biscuits, mashed potatoes and ribs. I wonder how my family would taste if I threw them on the BBQ…?

9:00 p.m.
Going to bed so I don’t have to deal with the world. I hate koalas.

Day 2

6:00 a.m.
One more day. I can do this. My stomach on the other hand…

8:00 a.m.
Feeling lightheaded and delirious. So this is what madness tastes like.

8:30 a.m.
Still not allowed coffee. Damn.

11:00 a.m.
I think my body surrendered and realized it wasn’t going to get food for another day. I’m feeling okay and confident that the worst is over.

Noon
No more white grape juice – all water until tomorrow. For lunch I am to make a cocktail of some sort of salt medicine my doctor gave me mixed with water. It was pretty much like licking the ocean floor. It says it will take about an hour to kick in.

12:05 p.m.
Apparently it only took 5 minutes for it to kick in and the worst is yet to come.

12:15 p.m.
Are you kidding me?

12:30 p.m.
I want to die.

12:45 p.m.
How is there stuff left in my body?!?

1:00 p.m.
The real question is: Why am I still at work enduring this?!!

1:30 p.m.
Fuc* this shi*! No pun intended. Going home for the day.

2:30 p.m.
Tried taking a nap but my body has other plans. The delirium has been replaced with feelings of torture.

5:00 p.m.
Was able to sleep for a bit in between trips to the bathroom, laying on the floor and cursing the world. Went online and saw most people who undergo the procedure think the preparation is worst than the test. From the description of the test, and medieval looking diagram, I call it a draw.

Day 3

11:30 a.m.
Somewhere between early evening and the test I think I had an out-of-body experience and traveled to the moon since I don’t remember a thing from last night. To put it mildly, the test was every shade of uncomfortable with a dab of evil. After the nurse talked me in from the ledge, I completed the procedure. Almost punched the doctor in the throat when he said I would have to repeat this when I’m 60. To celebrate, I am now ordering a 1 lb. cheeseburger at Fuddrucker’s – will probably gain back the 8 pounds I lost in this one meal.

Noon
Couldn’t wait and had a bite.
